Dec 27, 2014 Can AIDS Be Cured? Strategies to cure HIV infection are being explored by Dr. Steven Deeks, a Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV/AIDS at SFGH. A recent article in the New Yorker features Dr. Deeks and discusses the reasoning behind researching ways in which to reduce the reservoir of HIV infection in the body and, ultimately, aim for long-term remission and even cure from the disease.

Dec 29, 2014 San Francisco's “Getting to Zero” Coalition - which aims to make San Francisco the first jurisdiction with zero new HIV infections, zero stigma and zero deaths – was cofounded by Dr. Diane Havlir, Chief of the Division of HIV/AIDS at SFGH. The strategic plan of this campaign involves a three-pronged approach to achieve these goals: expansion of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) within the city of San Francisco, increasing the reach of the RAPID program (which aims to delivery antiretroviral therapy as rapidly as possible to newly-diagnosed HIV-infected individuals), and strategies to encourage retention in care.
