Som Chatterjee, PhD
Assistant Professor

1001 Potrero Ave
San Francisco, CA 94110

Dr. Chatterjee received his master's degree from the Department of Biophysics and Molecular Biology, University of Kolkata (Calcutta), India. He performed his doctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Trinad Chakraborty, Justus-Liebig University, Germany where he studied the infection process of an intracellular bacterial pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes, which is responsible for causing food borne illnesses. Upon completion of his doctoral study, he joined Dr. Michael Otto's group at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the secretion process of a group of cytolytic peptides toxins called Phenol Soluble Modulins (PSMs) in Staphylococcus aureus, an important human bacterial pathogen that is responsible for causing high morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2014, Dr. Chatterjee joined Dr. Henry Chambers' group at University of California, San Francisco to study the major public health problem of antimicrobial resistance in S. aureus. In 2015, he became an assistant professor and currently his research interests are to determine the mechanistic basis of several interesting and novel pathways that mediate antibiotic resistance in S. aureus.
